Pirate flotilla attacks Chinese container ship in the Gulf of Aden

The 5,700 TEU Chinese Shipping Container Line (CSCL) container ship Xin Lian Yun Gang was reported rescued by Iranian naval forces from an attack by pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Monday.

Local reports described five boats, each containing five armed pirates, converging on the Chinese-flagged ship in an attempt to hijack her on the morning of the 17th September.

An Iranian destroyer deployed to the area upon receiving an emergency call from the ship. The attackers had to flee the scene under counter-attack by special operation teams using light weapons

No official statement has been published by the operator, CSCL. After the rescue the ship continued its voyage from from Singapore to the port of Jeddah.
