The UK Mutual War Risks Association is run by, for, and in the interests of its Members, providing superior cover for ships of virtually any size, anywhere in the world. Established in 1913, we are UK shipping’s biggest mutual war risk insurer and the first club to offer war risks cover internationally on a mutual basis.

The mutual advantage

UK War Risks is a mutual club, owned by its Members. Each Member essentially contributes to cover the other Members, bringing three clear advantages over commercial insurance:

A greater focus on Members’ needs

As a mutual organisation, we put our Members’ interests at the very centre of everything we do. We have no shareholders to answer to. The Rules and scope of cover is set by the Members and is constantly evolving as the needs of the risks facing the international shipping community evolve.

Quality insurance at competitive rates

Without the need to return a profit, the Club is able to charge Members a competitive rate reflecting the financial position of the Club. Please see Circular C1-2019 for further information.

Of course it is possible that Supplementary Calls can also be made, but there hasn’t been one since we began in 1913.

Access to expert advice

As specialists, our Members know they can rely on us for expert advice. From pirate deterrents to Blue Card arrangements or new EU legislation on passenger services, we are here to help.

International Membership

Our Members include single ship owners to large fleets operating all over the world. Members include a full range of internationally trading ships in the modern merchant fleet, including:

  • bulk carriers
  • tankers (crude and product)
  • container ships
  • liquefied gas carriers
  • passenger ships (cruise and ferry)
  • technical ships (cable layers, anchor handling craft, offshore support vessels, seismic and survey ships)
